So how does the second movie in this franchise hold up? Good, if it didn’t, I wouldn’t have written a huge intro talking about how great the Toy Story franchise was. Toy Story lends itself to new ideas and new stories, new toy stories if you will. The Toy Story movies all explore interesting aspects of living as a toy, your kid gets a new favourite toy, you get broken, your kid grows up, your new kid doesn’t like you (yes, I know that’s exactly what Schaffrillas said in his Cars video but it’s too good a point to not mention). The idea of toys being alive is a great one, one which you can use to tell so many unique stories. Toy Story 2, 3, and 4 are all excellent movies with clear ideas behind them, they all feel like stories that somebody wanted to tell, not excuses to fill the studios pockets. But when Pixar actually wants to create a sequel it shows, this has happened three times, weirdly every time it has been in the Toy Story franchise.

The first time Pixar created a sequel exclusively for profit was with Cars 2 which isn’t exactly good. whilst fine enough movies were likely not made because somebody genuinely had an idea (yeah Brad Bird said that he only made a sequel to The Incredibles because he had an idea but Incredibles 2 clearly wasn’t a story that needed to be told, I genuinely believe he just said that to make more people watch the movie). Movies like Incredibles 2, Finding Dory, Cars 3, and Monsters, University. For a long period of time Pixar was forced to pump out sequel after sequel by Disney, no longer allowed to be the hub of creativity it used to be.
